“Questionable Minds,” a New Book: Conversations with Writers about Writing

OTTAWA, Ontario CANADA, 2017-Feb-15 — /EPR ENTERTAINMENT NEWS/ — The mind of a writer is a mysterious place. In Questionable Minds: conversations with writers, social psychologist dr george pollard gives a guided tour of the creative mental landscape of writers. In this unique collection of conversations, dr pollard explores the making of a fictional story or a stand-up comedy routine.

If you’re curious how your favourite novel or stand-up comedy routine comes into being, Questionable Minds helps you find out. This new book helps answer many questions. Where do the ideas come from? How do authors develop their characters? What is the secret of writing a successful stand-up comedy routine?

In this eclectic view of the workings of the imagination; dr pollard has assembled a remarkable panel of writers, covering a wide of range of literature. The conversations, in this collection, are with writers of thrillers, satire and westerns, as well as stand-up comedy.

Alessandra Torre tells gripping tales she claims are erotica. Peter Mehlman, a pillar of Seinfeld, has an idiosyncratically ironic eye and smooth, easy writing style. Chris Allen trades in thrillers that may contain more than a hint of truth.

Bruce Holbert is the thriftiest of writers, building finely honed sentences. Victoria Patterson artfully skewers the upper class, of Orange County, California. Steve Berry creates intricate mysteries against a backdrop of notional history. J Scott Fuqua tells tales with words and illustrations that resurrect a bygone era.

Ann Lewis Hamilton writes serious stories in a shrewdly droll style. Gabe Abelson is the A-list writer of late-night television talk show monologues. Jay Bonansinga writes The Walking Dead novels.

What inspires these writers? How do they develop stories or comedy? Why must they write?

To a one, they agree writing is sweating blood that shows up as squiggles on a page or pixels on an e-reader. Writing fiction or stand-up comedy is not for the easily distracted, the indolent or faint of heart. Writers must be eager to chase their characters and stories down the rabbit hole.

Questionable Minds is notable because of the depth and clarity of the insights found in the conversations. The book exhibits a unique intimacy; there’s no sense of canned answers to a list of prepared questions. Instead these conversations move effortlessly, following lines of curiosity and interest, while drawing out a wealth of detail.

Every writer dr pollard talks with has a different story to tell. Each has his or her own sources of inspiration. Their routines are personal; sometimes fitting writing around the rest of their lives or, for a few, squeezing in time for family, if they can drag themselves away from writing.

It is notable how willingly, candid and freely the writers talk. They discuss in detail the motivations that drive them to write. For some it’s enthusiasm; others want to explore their own lives and, perhaps, reframe them in a different context; still others want to discover what happens to their characters, as the story unfolds and still others simply enjoy the act of writing. Questionable Minds is an inside view of some highly distinctive minds, which are absorbing places to explore.

Although dr pollard explores similar themes with each writer, the conversations never become repetitive. Each writer is too distinctive a personality; each brings something fresh to the conversations and our understanding of why writers write. If you wonder how writers do what they do, this book will show you that it’s much more complicated and enthralling than you may imagine; it will improve your reading experience, too.

Questionable Minds is available through Amazon, in paperback and eBook editions at https://www.amazon.com/Questionable-Minds-Conversations-george-pollard. Review copies, in MOBI format, are available from the author at drgeorgep@questionableminds.com. For more information on Questionable Minds, visit the web site http://questionableminds.com or e-mail, as you wish, perhaps to arrange an interview with dr pollard.

Mexican Author Goes Online With Latest Work And Hits All Times Download High

Mr. Volnie is the author of a dozen of successful published fiction novels, ranging in themes as diverse as Sci-Fi, History, mysticism or police procedures, all of them received enthusiastically by his ever growing number of followers and fans.

This time, he has surprised his readers with a reconstruction of the Gospels, a recreation of the antique scriptures as analyzed from a rational, critical, sometimes hermetic point of view. Mr. Volnie’s version of the story leaves little room for faith, as miracles are unveiled, prophecies are explained and underlying motifs gradually surface to meet with human nature.

As for the reason to give away his writing instead of making profit, the author explains in his blog www.alejandrovolnie.com.mx (translated from Spanish): “A fast spread of my work throughout the Spanish speaking world is worth giving up the down payment of any publisher”. It is to be said that printed books are expensive in Latin America if its price is compared to people’s average daily income. “My work is for everybody and I don’t expect anything else in exchange than the comments of my readers” he also states in his blog.

To download Yehoshua el mago (Yehoshua the Magician) in Spanish simply go to www.yehoshuaelmago.com.mx and follow the instructions. This is the only way to get it at the present time, although it’s easy to foresee that printed copies of this fifteen hour reading will soon be piled up in most bookstores all around the world, available in several languages, as this amazing tale deserves it.

Though The Debate Over Celibacy In The Catholic Church Has Been Ongoing, Two Recent Efforts Have Thrust The Discussion Front And Center

An organization known as Celibacy Is the Issue Ministries (CITI) is making a renewed effort to prove that married priests can administer the sacrament under Canon Law #843, which states that “both pastors of souls and all other members of Christ’s faithful have a duty to ensure that those who ask for the sacraments are prepared for their reception.”

It’s a practical look at marriage and the priesthood that may convince the Church to reconsider its stance on celibacy—a stance discussed in harrowing detail by a priest whose own battles with celibacy cost him dearly.

Father Ameen (not his real name), a Catholic priest and author of Confessions of a Passionate Priest, believes that fewer parishes would struggle to find priests if the Church were more pragmatic on the issue of celibacy.

“I had an affair with a married woman,” says Father Ameen. “The reality of human nature is that we need intimacy. The Church is failing to address that. ”

In his book, Father Ameen discusses his own punishment at the hands of his bishop after his affair went public. He says he believes that allowing married priests to remain as operating clerics would help to avoid situations like his, which got worse recently when his bishop found out that he had written a book about it. Father Ameen was barred from returning to his parish.

“The Church often looks the other way when priests are having intimate relationships,” says Father Ameen. “They understand, as well as I and CITI do, that marriage does not distract from priestly duties.”

Recent statistics may force the Church to admit as much:

• More than 25,000 priests have married in the United States since the 1970s.
• At present, more than 5,300 parishes are without priests.
• In the last thirty years, seminary enrollment has dropped from 45,000 to just 3,500.

“I love the Church, but it does have some rules that serve no one,” says Father Ameen. “I’m proof, as are all married Eastern Rite priests, that one can live in the secular world and still serve God.”

Father Ameen remains dedicated to the priesthood despite his contradiction of specific Church rules. He currently lives in an undisclosed location in the United States, preferring to remain anonymous to avoid recrimination.

Whaka Publishing Announces Book Release 22nd April 2009, Earth Day: The Weather’s Wrath-O3 By Ade Paul

Whaka Publishing announces book release 22nd April 2009, Earth Day: The Weather’s Wrath-O3 by Ade Paul; an intriguing fictional epic that makes you think, could this really happen? Global Warming: Fact, Fiction or Farce? Do we need to Act? A green novel to make you ponder,‘The Great Green Debate: Ecology Vs Economics: Education through Entertainment for Climate Change?’

Take a webvote @ www.whakabooks.com. Are you the apathetic lifestyler, or join the green machine? Our future generations may rue our apathy and ask why we didn’t act?

When an important topic like the survival of the planet and our existence come up, then debate will naturally be heated. This is something you don’t want the power brokers to get wrong, yet it is a very complex issue, with multi-factorial extrinsic and intrinsic factors all affecting the outcome, including the solar system, politics, money and scientific analysis. The weather measurements in the past have lacked the precision required to accurately analyse the data and trends when using global computerized climate models due to the variables being so complex. Each variable is open to debate by both sceptics and protagonists. The sceptics argue that data is too inaccurate when using temperature variance and atmospheric gas concentrations. Yet the scientific consensus is that global warming is occurring.

When was the last time you thought about the environment, we all take it for granted in our comfortable first world lifestyles, but imagine a world with meteor showers not rain, UV rays that scorched your skin mutating the nuclei within the cells causing cancer with just minutes of exposure. Even now we see more natural disasters on TV and our insurance premiums always go up. None of us are making enough effort as our tangible risks are low and apathy is easier than action. WHAKAKAHA= make a strong effort.

Natural instinct is for survival, but when the apathetic lifestyler is accepted as status quo, compared to the green protagonist, nature is threatened and meteorological mayhem ensues. Most people live in naïve ignorant bliss of what the future holds, comfortable in their lifestyles and the fear of losing this outweighs honest compassion for the weak in humanity; the pursuit of Darwin’s adaptation for the survival instinct, survival of the strongest, remains.

Some antagonists believe that global warming hype began as a political weapon under the UK Thatcher government, at a time when the coal miners’ strikes and unions were at their strongest and nearly brought down the Conservative Party. Thatcher wanted nuclear power generators and so devised a proposal to the British Academy of Scientists to prove a relationship between global warming and coal powered plants. This is in stark contrast to USA President Obama who advocates greener renewable energy to help recharge the economy by saving money in this recession.

This exciting novel portrays a global civilization sent into economic and civil turmoil, not initially by Wall Street going into freefall, but from the purposeful ozone destruction by Mr. Spratton, TT Enterprises Inc; who wants to hold the countries of the United Nations to ransom to pay for protection from the lethal ultraviolet radiation now bombarding the earth by his stolen adapted deflectors. Without electricity the communication links are severed and clearing bank and international stock market transactions fail, security is breached and systems shut down. When the whole of global commerce ceases, desperation creeps into society as food and products dry up and people change once diseases rampage through communities. See what the effects of this are, and could this really happen?

What we need to understand is that there are many inter-related systems interacting with each other in the atmosphere and the earth reacts to the forcing and feedback mechanisms in place. It is so complex that nobody has a magic bullet to answer this, and until then, the media won’t be interested, as there is no money in it. The human body is as complex, where medical science continues to research cures and techniques, and these regularly make press releases acknowledged by the general media in newspapers, radio, television and the web. Therefore the media need to answer why not environmental products and ecological breakthroughs? Sceptics will argue we don’t need that many weather or ecological stories on the news, but the weather dominates our daily existence, whether it rain, snow or shine.

The Ant with Red Pants

Knowing what to tell your children about verbal peer intimidation, especially if they are being bullied, can be difficult. Now one author is trying to make it a little easier by telling the story of an ant who becomes a hero, despite being teased and laughed at by his fellow ants.

J.A. Osowski, author of the new children’s book The Ant with Red Pants, believes that children need concrete examples of role models that have overcome challenges such as intimidation.

“We all face challenges in life and sometimes that includes the ridicule of other people,”says Mr. Osowski. “Having public examples of people—or, in this case, ants—that believe in themselves and who don’t listen to the negativity of other people is really helpful to kids.”

Mr. Osowski’s book, illustrated by Michael and Alicia Smith, is about an ant named Andrew who makes red pants for himself from a spider’s web in order to hide his legs, which he thinks are too skinny. The other ants in the colony mock Andrew for his insecurities and his situation becomes worse.

“We all have insecurities about feeling like an outsider or that we aren’t the same as the other people around us,” says Mr. Osowski. “It’s important that kids see that bullies are really just insecure people who don’t know how to manage those insecurities.”

Andrew the ant learns to overcome his insecurities, and the bullies in his colony, in order to save the day when his colony is threatened by the winter cold. It’s a lesson that Mr. Osowski has taught to hundreds of school kids during readings of his book.

“The moral of the story is how children can discover and celebrate their own personal gifts and talents in the face of people who may be making fun of them,” says Mr. Osowski. “That’s something we’ve all had to deal with in life.”

Joseph A. Osowski resides in eastern Connecticut with his wife, Ann Marie. They have two grown children and two grandchildren. Drawing from his own experiences, he hopes to build children’s confidence as they try to fit in with their peers in today’s society.

Illustrators Michael and Alicia Smith reside in eastern Connecticut with their two children, a boy and a girl. Michael works part-time and cares for their son, who has special needs. Alicia is an elementary-level art teacher in the town of Ledyard.

You Might Be Getting Old If…

Most people know Jeff Foxworthy as a famous stand-up comedian (in addition to being an actor, TV celebrity, producer and writer). What many people may not know, however, is that Jeff Foxworthy is also very much a “stand-up” guy. Fellow Atlantan and newly minted author himself, Michael Garee, explains.

“As my first published book, 200 Sure-Fire, Lead-Pipe-Cinch, No-Question-About-It Ways to Tell If . . . You Might Be Getting OLD! [Eloquent Books, 2008], was literally coming off the presses, I contacted Jeff Foxworthy to see if he would review it for me. Since my book was so strongly influenced by his You Might Be a Redneck If series of books, I had dedicated my book to him,” Garee, a sixty-six-year-old retiree, said. “I thought it would be great if I could get him to review the book, being fully aware of how difficult it probably would be to make direct contact with Jeff. Still, I decided to take a chance and try to contact him through his New York City publisher.”

About three months later, literally out of the blue, Garee said he received a personal letter from Foxworthy telling him that he would be glad to take a look at his (Garee’s) new book and tell him what he thought of it.

“I was of course very grateful to receive a personal response from Jeff,” Garee added,“but at the same time, I must admit, I was nearly floored too! Here was a man—a famous celebrity—who stays about as busy as one can imagine, but he still took the time to write me, a longtime fan, completely unknown to him, a personal letter. Amazing!”

As requested, Garee sent a copy of his new book to Foxworthy shortly after it was published, and true to his word, within a relatively short time, Foxworthy responded with a personal note.

“Get this,” Garee laughed, “Jeff begins his note with, ‘Sorry for the delay’! Here is a man who currently is working on two new books, creating a new animated series, helping a friend with a new movie, opening new restaurants, is heavily involved in charity work with Duke University Children’s Hospital in Durham, NC, which treats children with cancer, and hosts the popular TV series ‘Smarter than a 5th grader,’ and he apologizes to me for making me ‘wait’ for his review of my book!”

How did Foxworthy like Garee’s book?

“He said it made him ‘laugh out loud, though too many of (the one-liners in my book) hit way too close to home,’ since he just turned 50 himself this year,” Garee said.

“I’ve been a fan of Jeff Foxworthy’s comedy and writing for many, many years,” Gareeadded, “and I’ve always thought of him as decent, family-oriented guy. Of course I was also aware that that could merely have been the persona he carefully cultivated. Now I know for certain that, not only is he a ‘class act,’ he’s also a ‘class guy.’ A stand-up comedian—and a great and very talented one—yes, but also very much a real stand-up guy too!”

“In this day and age where celebrities daily make fools and asses of themselves with their outrageous lifestyles and bizarre behaviors,” Garee said, “it’s refreshing to know that a celebrity like Jeff Foxworthy still takes his work seriously, but never himself, that he is still approachable by his fans and admirers.”

Catholic priests are in short supply in recent years, a reality that has renewed the debate over celibacy

According to a recent study, many current priests are already ignoring the order altogether. A poll of 800 Polish priests revealed that many are ignoring the Church’s ban on intimate relationships. More than fifty percent said they wanted to live with a woman and a third admitted to having sex. It’s a dark secret one priest working in America kept for years—before writing about it in his new book.

Father Ameen (not his real name), an Eastern Rite Catholic priest for the last eighteen years and author of Confessions of a Passionate Priest, had an affair with a married woman. When the relationship was exposed to his bishop, Father Ameen was punished harshly because it brought the threat of a lawsuit from the woman’s husband, a scandal the Church didn’t want.

“Is consensual sex a sin?” Father Ameen asks. “Or has Church doctrine failed to address not only our contemporary lives but the reality of human need?”

Father Ameen reveals in his book that his affair was only exceptional in that it brought the threat of a lawsuit. Among the numerous scandals the Pope has had to deal with, the increasing number of non-celibate priests has been largely overlooked.

“The Church would have looked the other way, as it often does,” says Father Ameen, “except that her husband threatened to file a lawsuit.”

During his affair, Father Ameen spearheaded the building of a noted assisted-living facility at no cost to the Church and ministered to his flock with enthusiasm and dedication. “The idea that a secular life distracts us from our priestly duties is nonsense,” he says. “I was never more productive as a priest than when I was also happy in my personal life.”

In recent years, some revealing statistics have surfaced about Catholic priests:

• In the last fifty years, 20,000 priests have left the priesthood in the United States, the majority to marry.
• More than 160 priests in the Milwaukee Roman Catholic Archdiocese have signed a petition urging that celibacy be optional in the priesthood and sent it to the president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops.
• Journalist and Church scholar Adam Szostkiewicz has said he believes “It is an absurd idea to continue with the celibate for the Catholic Church. I’m not expecting any changes under the current Pope, Benedict XVI, but something will have to change after him.”
• At any one time, twenty percent of priests are involved in sexual relationships and eight percent are experimenting sexually.

“I love the Church, but it does have some rules that serve no one,” says Father Ameen. “I’m proof, as are all the married Eastern Rite priests, that one can live in the secular world and still serve God.”

Father Ameen remains dedicated to the priesthood, despite his contradiction of specific Church rules. He currently lives in an undisclosed location in the United States, preferring to remain anonymous to avoid recrimination.
