Parallax Animation Story Team – Including Veterans from Pixar, Disney, DreamWorks, and Illumination – Adapt Classic Comic Strip

Redwood City, California, USA, 2018-May-09 — /EPR ENTERTAINMENT NEWS/ — Parallax Media Ventures, a leading animation storytelling production company, today announced that it is developing the classic American comic strip, ‘B.C.’ by John Hart Studios as an animated feature film. The team’s pitch reel, featuring storyboard images and concept paintings, will be available for private viewing in May. The feature is a 4-quadrant title Parallax is shoring up for early 2021 release, and currently meeting with potential partners and financiers.

Parallax and Hart Studios will attend the Licensing Expo May 22-24 in Las Vegas to discuss this project with interested parties. To schedule a time to meet and view the pitch reel, please email Kevin Richardson at

Founded in 2015, Parallax Media Ventures is led by Kevin Richardson, a former executive and senior producer at Nickelodeon, Electronic Arts and Mattel Interactive, and on feature films for leading domestic firms as LucasFilms, Hyperion, Colossal; and abroad at Wang Films Taiwan, MS Films Germany, KingKey Animation China, and most recently Studio Climb Malaysia. Kevin initially became interested in ‘B.C.’ in high school when he produced an animated short on the building of Stonehenge with characters inspired by the strip.

“Today, Johnny Hart’s grandsons Mason and Mick are the wizards behind the daily comic strip,” said Patti Hart of John Hart Studios. “Using their grandfather’s playbook, they take inspiration from trends, headlines, and the politics du-jour and spin them into timeless commentaries and general silliness. We are super excited about seeing B.C. continue its journey onto the big screen. It’s been a great pleasure working with Parallax Media Ventures. Kevin has put together an amazing team and their level of professionalism continues to impress us.”

“B.C. is an American classic like apple pie and baseball,” said Richardson. “60 years strong, the daily strip runs in over 800 North American newspapers – newspapers with a reach of 64.4 million readers. This gives us a tremendous connection to the fans, and allows us to expand B.C. to an on-screen and off-screen experience. Mason, Mick, and Patti at Hart Studios have helped us understand and blow out the characters – right down to what they eat for breakfast! Thanks to the time-tested and quirky ensemble, there’s no shortage of fun material to work with.”

The Parallax ‘B.C.’ team has collectively worked on 18 animated features, with an aggregate $10 billion USD box office.

The Parallax ‘B.C.’ team includes:

Lua Hadar with Twist performs international standards with a different ‘twist’ on style; presenting also original and rarely performed songs, in several languages. English, French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Japanese and Malagasy (the language of Madagascar) are represented in theIr new CD and DVD, Like A Bridge. The CD, recorded in the same sessions with the DVD, is receiving critical acclaim and airplay on over 100 radio stations, across the USA and in Canada, The Netherlands, Germany, England and Brazil.

Hadar says “We’re honored to perform in this series, which was created to Inspire musical excellence through positive role models. As a teaching artist, I know that what we directly teach our youth is just as potent as what models we show them. I felt this would be a perfect opportunity to present young Josh Reinier, with whom I had the pleasure of working at the San Francisco Opera. As an independent artist-producer, I also want to show youth that they can create their own opportunities, rather than wait for someone else to create them. That is what I have done with Twist since its inception in 2007.”

Brooklyn Public, an Educational Documentary filmed in New York Public School launches Kickstarter

Brooklyn Public has recently launched a Kickstarter campaign seeking finishing funds for the project at:

Brooklyn Public is a look into a New York public school and the surrounding neighborhood, through the eyes of it’s students. We will follow four students as they begin a community project in their freshman English class, led by their compelling teacher, Mr. Van Dyke. Celebrating people and places around their community that in the past have commonly drawn negative attention, the students will uncover a new found significance in their neighborhood and education. Growing up first-generation American in East New York, the kids will face daily hardships in and out of the classroom. This film will help people to better understand public education in New York City, and hopefully help future educators in their own classrooms.

Universities, colleges and anyone seeking a screening, can donate $2500 to the project to have the film presented for them by filmmaker Adam Banicki for their selected audience anywhere in the US.

Adam Banicki grew up in the Midwest and attended DePaul University in Chicago for his undergraduate degree in Digital Cinema. After graduation, he moved to Los Angeles and spent time working for Entertainment Tonight and The Cleveland Show. After two years Adam moved to New York to pursue an MFA in Social Documentary Film at the School of Visual Arts. Brooklyn Public is Adam’s first major documentary film. His previous short documentary, The Piano Busker, screened at festivals across the US and was nominated for Best Documentary at the Naperville Independent Film Festival.

Amid National Racial Tension Writing Duo Produces Edgy Sketch Comedy Series

Actor/producer Sean Hampton (CSI, 90210) has teamed up with producer Matt Getic to launch a new sketch comedy series entitled The S&M Experience. “The series fills a gap in the comedy world,” Getic said in a statement. “We’re not chained to conventional characters and a formulaic structure with this show.”

The series has not officially launched but the duo has already raised eyebrows due to the off-color and racial material in some of their skits. Hampton (who is African American) and Getic (who is Caucasian) both feel such criticism is misguided. Commenting on the issue Getic says, “Our creative process doesn’t come from a place of hate, so taking offense to our comedy is ridiculous. The evening news has one hundred percent more racially motivated material than our skits.” Hampton backs his co-creator on this subject and challenges their detractors. “There are a lot of people looking to capitalize off of others work. I think there are more false claims of offense than genuine outrage.”

Aside from these issues preliminary critic response has been glowing. The series will launch on April 26th and the creators have decided to keep their distribution model to new media outlets only. When asked about the decision Hampton said, “We decided to keep our material new media because that will ensure it stays ours. Running it through the political correctness filter will take away from everything we’re trying to accomplish.”

First Images Of WWII German Submarine Sunk 68 Years Ago In Brazil

The U-Boat was located by the Schurmann Family in July 2011. Almost one year after locating the submarine, the Schurmanns joined efforts with deep sea diving experts to collect images of the U-513. With specialized technology, using a remotely operated underwater vehicle (ROV) the expedition made a 135 meters dive to film and take pictures of the wreck, for the first time in history.

“After years of research, finally we watched this historical moment. We first saw a shadow then gradually the images became very clear, the submarine is almost intact and whole as if she was placed there to sleep” said Vilfredo Schurmann leader of the expedition.

“The ROV (Remotely operated underwater vehicle) did several dives and with every new image we celebrated this great feat” says David Schurmann, the film director.

It all began in 2001 aboard their sailing yacht “Aysso”, when the Schurmanns a well-known sailing and expedition family in Brazil, was told of the story of a German submarine, sunk in 1943 during WWII in the waters of Southern Brazil.

Vilfredo and Heloisa Schurmann where hooked on the mysterious story and started researching the facts in the National Archives in Washington – USA, Berlin – Germany and in Rio de Janeiro – Brazil.

They were granted a license from the Brazilian Navy, and obtained the support of the Santa Catarina Government and UNIVALI University and were sponsored by TOTVS, CPE (Coastal Planning & Engineering) and FUGRO BRAZIL to further the search.

A team of 35 professionals (all volunteers) which included divers, oceanographers, retired officers from the Brazilian and USA Navy & Air Force, archaeologists, historians, filmmakers and the last surviving member of the USA airplane responsible for the U-boat sinking aided on the search.

After 2 years and 18 expeditions at sea, operating Side Scanning Sonars and Magnetometer, on July 17th 2011 on board their adapted sailing yacht “Aysso”, the Schurmanns located the exact position of the sunken submarine.

On March 8, 2012, aboard two ships, the expedition led by Vilfredo Schurmann and a crew of 20, filmed for the first time in history since her sinking 68 years ago, images of U-513. The U-boat is considered one of the WWII submarines sunk furthers away from Germany during battle.

The underwater footage of the U-513 was made with a ROV model Sea Eye Falcon Marine, capable of operating up to 300 meters deep, assigned and operated by FUGRO BRAZIL.

S/V “Aysso” and M/V “Thunder” anchored at the location, launched the ROV (Remotely operated underwater vehicle) and with sonar-aided navigation (similar to a ship’s radar – working under water) located the submarine.

The recordings were performed with the ROV camera itself. For best results, HD 3D cameras were also mounted in housings to captured images of the submarine.

Support: Santa Catarina Government and UNIVALI University

The U-513, under the command of the German captain Karl Friedrich Guggenberger, had the mission to sink any enemy vessel on the route between Buenos Aires and Rio de Janeiro. She had already torpedoed three ships, including two Americans and a Brazilian.

The U-Boat-513 sank on July 19th, 1943. Lieutenant Roy S. Whitcomb was on a PBM-VP-74 flying-boat bomber on an antisubmarine sweep and spotted the surfaced U-boat. He ordered the attack. Captain Guggenberger on the deck of the submarine saw the approaching plane, he knew there was no time to submerge and began a counterattack. Whitcomb’s dropped six 225-pound bombs depth charges and the U-boat absorbed the full impact on her hull.

The U-513, 76 meters in length sunk immediately with its 46 crew. 7 men who were on deck where the only survivors, among them the captain Guggenberger.

The Schurmann Family is the first Brazilian family to circumnavigate the world on a sailboat and the only Brazilian family to have done it twice. A household name in Brazil, the Schurmann Family has been active around the world through their online school program, as well as their films and TV programs.

In 1984 Vilfredo, Heloisa and their children left their home, their work and school and set off from Florianópolis, the capital city of the State of Santa Catarina, in southern Brazil, to pursue their dream: circumnavigate the world on a sailing yacht.

Their children, Pierre, David and Wilhelm, were 15, 10 and 7 years old. On this first adventure, the Schurmann Family spent 10 years at sea.

In 1997 the Schurmann Family began their second great adventure Magellan Global Adventure. The goal was to retrace the route sailed by Ferdinand Magellan’s fleet, the first complete circumnavigation of the planet. For this adventure, apart from the parents only their son David Schurmann and Kat, their 5-year-old daughter went along. Magellan Global Adventure was followed by more than 1,5 million people, from 44 countries. Every month the adventure’s filmed reports, broadcast internationally, had an average of 40 million television viewers in Brazil and many more around the world. After 30 months, the Schurmann’s yacht returned to Brazil.

The Family members are: Vilfredo, Heloisa, Pierre, David, Wilhelm and Kat Schurmann (d. 2006).
They have released 4 best sellers in Brazil and one box office hit documentary film: Books

Former Decorated Philadelphia Police Officer Set To Direct Gritty Indie Film

Former decorated Philadelphia police officer, Ozzie Feliciano and 47 Films Production are set to start pre-production on Ozzie’s sobering independent film, Andy the Star. Andy the Star, a realistic police drama loosely based on actual events, will start film pre-production in the spring of 2011 with plans to wrap-up production by the end of summer 2011. Andy the Star is a realistic police drama set in the City of Philadelphia in 2005.

Janelle Mathis, a young Latin woman living in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania discovers, after his death, that her long lost father of twenty years was a legendary police officer in Philadelphia named David Antonio (Andy) Gonzalez. Janelle, eager to discover the legend of her long, lost father by going to Philadelphia, is soon faced with the reality that the legend and mystic bestowed on her famous father might all be a myth created by his police brothers in blue to protect one of the most corrupt officers in Philadelphia’s police department history and possibly a murder. Andy the Star, is a grim and gritty drama about a young woman’s emotional journey to find the true story of her father’s legendary life, and the emotional torment between, wanting to believe, and discovering the truth.

Andy the Star will be filmed on location throughout the city of Philadelphia and the city of Coatesville, a suburb just outside of Philadelphia. “I’m very excited to head back to Philadelphia, to the city that raised me and work on this film,” Ozzie states. “Andy the Star, is a story that has been forming in my mind for over seventeen years, shorty after I left the police department. I think what makes Andy the Star different from your traditional crime or police story is the fact that it is a very.. very grim story. I tell the story from a real police perspective and not from what has been portrayed in movies or on television nowadays. I think, that my time working in one of the most elite units in Philadelphia’s police department history, the Special Investigation Unit, gives me an unique point of view and allows me to show the audience the real world of law enforcement, in spite of how grim it might be.” A smiling Ozzie adds, “If you come to watch this movie with a preconceived notion of how rewarding law enforcement can be or to see police officers and what they do on a daily basis through rose-color glasses, boy… are you in for a treat”. Ozzie Feliciano plans to keep the Andy the Star script and some aspects of the pre-production process a secret and will not be made available to the public. “I want to keep the script and part of the filming close to my vest because I plan to put it all out there for everyone to see and I don’t want people who may be opposed to what I have written affect what I’m trying to accomplish, which is to tell this story”.

Filming of Andy the Star should take about twenty-one days and will require Ozzie, now at one hundred and ninety pounds, to lose over sixty pounds for a dramatic scene at the end of the film. “It’s going to be difficult losing that weight with all the incredible food in this great city but I’m going to try my best”, says Ozzie.

Unknown Afro-American Filmmaker Beats the Major Hollywood Studio System with a KING KONG Spoof

Few know this Unknown Indie’s success story is of a non traditional genre for an Afro-American. Names like Film Directors Spike Lee and John Singleton are not known for such sci-fi special effects. Yancey Hendrieth is a New Breed of black filmmaker more in common with Dino De Laurentiis, Peter Jackson and Kevin Costner. Yancey stars in his own epics. Yancey’s SPFX rivals ONE MILLION YEARS B.C. and Ray Harryhausen with stop motion models, mechanical and visual effects.

Unknown Afro-American Filmmaker Beats the Major Hollywood Studio System with a KING KONG Spoof

Yancey Hendrieth’s “cult classic” was created by modest means. A KING KONG size gorilla hand was operated manually. His visual effects establish this larger-than-life movie among those mysterious gigantic stone heads of “Easter Island”.

His IMDb Performance Resume reveals his 1976 SAG Debut in STARSKY & HUTCH. Yancey’s acting skills lead him into a gorilla role made famous by Rick Baker’s makeup for the cast of PLANET OF THE APES. As the son of SUPERSIMIAN, the KONG size gorilla in LOST ON ADVENTURE ISLAND, Yancey portrays BUDDY THE GORILLA, a Silver Back Mountain Bull in a mechanized ape suit walking on all legs by the aide of its forearm extenders. Yancey’s SPFX Team designed a full gorilla head piece helmet with facial expressions rivaling Rick Baker in THE INCREDIBLE SHRINKING WOMAN. Air brushing in keen areas made Yancey’s black ape fur appear having sun burn. Its silver back was a realistic airbrush job. “Born with a silver spoon in his mouth” did not apply to Yancey. He took a second mortgage on his house to finance this epic, which he proved “if there is a will there is a way” making a low budget $96K, yet elaborate film outside the Hollywood system. Voluptutous Amazon Women rode bareback spirited stallions adding opulent production value. These ladies and horses were actually rodeo champions enhancing this fantasy theme realism. Cast and crew shared Yancey’s “labor of love”. The Rondo Award Voters validated this collaboration by their nomination “Best Independent Production on DVD” and announcing Fourth Honorable Mention “Best Independent Film”. Editorial Page Quotes by Publisher Mike Fredericks, Prehistoric Times Magazine Issue No. 87 Fall 2008: “LOST ON ADVENTURE ISLAND is a dinosaur movie, sci-fi fantasy, KING KONG Horror Spoof, which has achieved International recognition by the French Website as a “cult horror classic” among multi-million dollar horror classics produced by major Hollywood studios and critical acclaim by THE 6TH ANNUAL RONDO HATTON CLASSIC AWARDS,, who recognizes best films in this genre. Click “The 6th Annual” then stroll until you find this information. It will be in two sections. LOST ON ADVENTURE ISLAND can only be purchased via its Official Website:” DVD List Price $14.95. People Search Experts Assist New Family Reunion TV Program

The makers of the hit family history series, ‘Who Do You Think You Are?’ are to produce a brand new series based on families that have been or are seeking to be reunited. Wall to Wall Television has asked Tracesmart for assistance in the making of the TV program, with the purpose of gathering true life examples of individuals that have successfully found relatives by means of the people search facility on Tracesmart’s website. It is hoped the stories will eventually form part of the documentary to be broadcast on ITV.

Tracesmart provides one of the leading web based people tracing facilities in the UK. Employing a range of consumer datasets, including the continuously updated electoral roll, the online resource provides an intuitive tracing service to the general public.

The facility also offers, amongst others, a name search tool and an address search feature, which provide consumers with an easy to use resource to find friends and family. The Tracesmart system has, over the years, helped reunite thousands of families and friends, presenting stories that often attract media attention from television and press.

Following the announcement of the proposed new family reunion show, Wall to Wall Television added, “The intention is to produce a documentary program that aims to reunite long lost family members. We are looking for a birth parent, adopted person, a separated sibling, estranged parent or someone who has grown up in care, hoping to be reunited with lost relatives. If you are over 18 and have experienced family separation and now feel ready to seek a reunion, then please get in touch with Wall to Wall Television.”

Regarding the company’s involvement, Owen Roberts, Tracesmart’s Communications Manager noted, “Tracesmart has increasingly become the first call for many TV production companies requesting advice or examples of reunion stories. We are more than happy to help as we feel the reunions which our service makes possible are very newsworthy and moving. Many people have little idea where to start when they desperately want to be reunited with a long lost friend or relative. I’m sure the program will benefit and entertain many people and will, I believe, develop into a popular format.”

Tsunami Productions Announces Launch Of Prince Of Wine Weekly TV Show For Fall 2009

A weekly TV show about wine, food and the story behind wine is being launched for Fall 2009 release according to Melissa McComas, President of Maryland based Tsunami Productions, agent and manager for San Diego based POW Media the producer of the show. “We have been looking for a series about wine for some time and we are happy to have found a unique voice in Walid Romaya”. McComas said.

Hosted by Romaya, a San Diego wine critic and founder of the wine blog, the show will showcase a journey of wine and food exploration where Romaya visits wineries and regions, telling the story of the wine from grape to bottle. “the fermentation basics of wine is the same, grape turns into wine, but each wine is so different and I have this platform to tell the story” said Romaya.

Wine is becoming a mainstream as people switch from hard liquor to wine. “Americans are drinking more wine than ever..for its health and social aspects” said McComas.“There are so many shows about food on TV, yet more and more Americans are hungry to know about wine, the Prince of Wine series will be the television viewer’s pocket-guide to everything wine”.

As a wine lover, collector and an amateur chef, Romaya has developed his wine palate and sense of observation by tasting thousands of wines over the years. “You could call me a wine nut, once I flew a thousand miles just to taste a rare bottle of wine” stated Romaya.

The show will feature segments where Romaya challenges the winemakers critiquing the wines and pairing them with food from guest chefs. Along the way Romaya will interact with the people who make the wines, such as the farmer, the harvest worker, and the bottle maker. “Whether it is the local supermarket $2 special or your vintage 1945 $10,000 Bordeaux, every bottle of wine has a story to tell” added Romaya. “ When I started drinking wine I was terrified by the wide range of grape varietals, the tastes, the vintages and what to look for…so that’s what got me interested in wine”.

The show will be filmed in established wine locations all over the world, from California to France as well as Argentina, Chile, South Africa and Australia. However, Romaya added “The show is not just about the famous wine regions, it’s also about small wineries in little towns in America and beyond. Did you know that there are some great wine gems in Missouri?”

“Discovering the undiscovered while guiding viewers on an entertaining adventure best describes this television series, Walid Romaya’s charisma and expertise set this program apart from the rest; we are delighted to introduce this program into the television marketplace” states McComas. The series will be introduced at the 2009 Cable Show in Washington DC beginning April 1, 2009.

You Might Be Getting Old If…

Most people know Jeff Foxworthy as a famous stand-up comedian (in addition to being an actor, TV celebrity, producer and writer). What many people may not know, however, is that Jeff Foxworthy is also very much a “stand-up” guy. Fellow Atlantan and newly minted author himself, Michael Garee, explains.

“As my first published book, 200 Sure-Fire, Lead-Pipe-Cinch, No-Question-About-It Ways to Tell If . . . You Might Be Getting OLD! [Eloquent Books, 2008], was literally coming off the presses, I contacted Jeff Foxworthy to see if he would review it for me. Since my book was so strongly influenced by his You Might Be a Redneck If series of books, I had dedicated my book to him,” Garee, a sixty-six-year-old retiree, said. “I thought it would be great if I could get him to review the book, being fully aware of how difficult it probably would be to make direct contact with Jeff. Still, I decided to take a chance and try to contact him through his New York City publisher.”

About three months later, literally out of the blue, Garee said he received a personal letter from Foxworthy telling him that he would be glad to take a look at his (Garee’s) new book and tell him what he thought of it.

“I was of course very grateful to receive a personal response from Jeff,” Garee added,“but at the same time, I must admit, I was nearly floored too! Here was a man—a famous celebrity—who stays about as busy as one can imagine, but he still took the time to write me, a longtime fan, completely unknown to him, a personal letter. Amazing!”

As requested, Garee sent a copy of his new book to Foxworthy shortly after it was published, and true to his word, within a relatively short time, Foxworthy responded with a personal note.

“Get this,” Garee laughed, “Jeff begins his note with, ‘Sorry for the delay’! Here is a man who currently is working on two new books, creating a new animated series, helping a friend with a new movie, opening new restaurants, is heavily involved in charity work with Duke University Children’s Hospital in Durham, NC, which treats children with cancer, and hosts the popular TV series ‘Smarter than a 5th grader,’ and he apologizes to me for making me ‘wait’ for his review of my book!”

How did Foxworthy like Garee’s book?

“He said it made him ‘laugh out loud, though too many of (the one-liners in my book) hit way too close to home,’ since he just turned 50 himself this year,” Garee said.

“I’ve been a fan of Jeff Foxworthy’s comedy and writing for many, many years,” Gareeadded, “and I’ve always thought of him as decent, family-oriented guy. Of course I was also aware that that could merely have been the persona he carefully cultivated. Now I know for certain that, not only is he a ‘class act,’ he’s also a ‘class guy.’ A stand-up comedian—and a great and very talented one—yes, but also very much a real stand-up guy too!”

“In this day and age where celebrities daily make fools and asses of themselves with their outrageous lifestyles and bizarre behaviors,” Garee said, “it’s refreshing to know that a celebrity like Jeff Foxworthy still takes his work seriously, but never himself, that he is still approachable by his fans and admirers.”

Ryan and Sean’s NOT SO Excellent Adventure

Ryan Higa and Sean Fujiyoshi, two teens from isolated Hilo, HI, captured the hearts of peers worldwide through their hilarious videos. In September ‘08, they became the #1 most subscribed channel on YouTube and now are starring in a feature film, “Ryan and Sean’s NOT SO Excellent Adventure.”

YouTube? Your Tube? No, it’s their tube! Ryan Higa and Sean Fujiyoshi, two teenagers have become so popular on You Tube that they are now starring in a professionally filmed, full-length motion picture, “Ryan and Sean’s NOT SO Excellent Adventure.”

Ryan Higa and Sean Fujiyoshi, using the title of Nigahiga, reached the heights of being named the number one most subscribed YouTube channel for September 2008—that’s more than 660,000 subscribers! Their increasing popularity led to the making of the film, “Ryan and Sean’s NOT SO Excellent Adventure.”

Popular may be an understatement. They have posted 57 videos during the past two years, which have been viewed more than 175 million times. These teenage comedic videos soon caught the attention of Derek Zemrak, the Founder of the California Independent Film Festival, and thus “Ryan and Sean’s NOT SO Excellent Adventure” was born.

The film is the real-life story of two young web celebrities who find themselves brought to Hollywood to audition and screen test for starring roles in the next big “buddy” film. Sought out by a producer, (played by Michael Buckley of YouTube fame) about to be kicked off the studio lot, Ryan and Sean are put through the grueling process of makeovers, massages, tanning beds, singing, dancing and action picture auditions.

Higa and Fujiyoshi bring a genuine and natural comedic performance to strange and sometimes surreal situations that are packed with hilarity. This teen comedy has something for everyone. Their current fans of You Tube will be especially surprised at how their Stars shine on the big screen. Non-stop fun and that special brand of humor that is Ryan and Sean can be found in this feature length film.

Recently, “Ryan and Sean’s NOT SO Excellent Adventure” premiered to sold-out crowds and throngs of screaming teenagers in Honolulu and San Francisco. The hilarious and entertaining film is currently available exclusively on DVD at

Ryan Higa and Sean Fujiyoshi, Background
Higa and Fujiyoshi started making videos because they were bored after school and didn’t want to go outside in the rain. Higa, who recently started his freshman year at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas, said living in Hilo started it all.

“There’s not much to do other than go watch a movie. Pretty much boredom kicked it off for us, and our parents didn’t mind because it kept us out of trouble.”

They created the videos to share with friends — nothing more. One day, when one of those friends couldn’t come over and Higa and Fujiyoshi didn’t feel like going out, they posted a lip-sync video on the Internet. Later, they saw that it received 100 hits.

“How did it get so many views?” Higa recalls wondering. “Did that person click on it 100 times?”

Demand for their unique style grew. It was the ninja video that first earned 1 million views.

With videos viewed over 160 million times, 18-year-old Ryan Higa’s wildly popular YouTube channel features Higa’s opinions and romps, as well as interviews with stars like Milo Ventimiglia and online duos with Will Farrell. One recent video was viewed over 653,000 times in only 1 week, another 201,000 times in 1 day.

Independent movie producer Derek Zemrak saw the “Ninja” clip when his 10-year-old son said all his friends in Los Angeles were talking about it.

“I immediately saw the raw talent,” says Zemrak, a producer/writer/director with a background in horror films.

Higa said spending several weeks making the movie in San Francisco was “very tiring” and “much harder” than he anticipated. But Zemrak says the young men were “so natural when they got out here.”

Of their growing fame, however, Higa remains somewhat ambivalent. “It’s kind of surprising,” he says simply. But he expresses a bit more enthusiasm for the movie itself.”It’s kind of unbelievable, especially since we’re from Hilo, and not much big things come from Hilo that I’m aware of.”
