Brooklyn Public, an Educational Documentary filmed in New York Public School launches Kickstarter

Brooklyn Public has recently launched a Kickstarter campaign seeking finishing funds for the project at: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/781739295/brooklyn-public

Brooklyn Public is a look into a New York public school and the surrounding neighborhood, through the eyes of it’s students. We will follow four students as they begin a community project in their freshman English class, led by their compelling teacher, Mr. Van Dyke. Celebrating people and places around their community that in the past have commonly drawn negative attention, the students will uncover a new found significance in their neighborhood and education. Growing up first-generation American in East New York, the kids will face daily hardships in and out of the classroom. This film will help people to better understand public education in New York City, and hopefully help future educators in their own classrooms.

Universities, colleges and anyone seeking a screening, can donate $2500 to the project to have the film presented for them by filmmaker Adam Banicki for their selected audience anywhere in the US.

Adam Banicki grew up in the Midwest and attended DePaul University in Chicago for his undergraduate degree in Digital Cinema. After graduation, he moved to Los Angeles and spent time working for Entertainment Tonight and The Cleveland Show. After two years Adam moved to New York to pursue an MFA in Social Documentary Film at the School of Visual Arts. Brooklyn Public is Adam’s first major documentary film. His previous short documentary, The Piano Busker, screened at festivals across the US and was nominated for Best Documentary at the Naperville Independent Film Festival.

Maribor – Slovenia: European City of Culture 2012 Greet The Bogside Artists

Maribor, second biggest city in Slovenia and this year’s Cultural Capital is host to Derry’s acclaimed Bogside Artists.

Their mural, which will form the centrepiece of the coming cultural festival will be unveiled by His Holiness The Dalai Lama on 17th May 2012.

The artists are fresh from their recent USA trip where they were feted by the universities of Bonaventure and Boston College.

This is a rare and unique coming together of cultures of Ireland, Slovenia and Tibet, factors that the artists have incorporated into theirmural in progress. For the artists this is an incredibly significant honour and accolade. Said spokesman Tom Kelly. ” We have been fortunate throughout the years to have enjoyed recognition and respect abroad and we are indeed grateful to the city of Maribor and its organizing council for giving us a wonderful centre stage on which to share our creative journey. And that is why we have decided to make a direct visual link between the Annette McGavigan schoolgirl mural from The People’s Gallery in the Bogside, Derry, which has proved to be one of the most popular of our creations and this mural which will highlight to the best of our ability the horrendous plight of the oppressed people of Tibet. We look forward immensely to meeting with their leader the Dalai Lama whose mission of peace, mutual respect and understanding in the world which has been our own foundation and mission for so many years. We see this as also an honour for the people of Derry and especially for all those who have supported us and The People’s Gallery. Like us, they are more than familiar with the abuses of human rights.”

The Bogside Artists created all of the twelve murals of The People’s Gallery. These murals depict the key events of the troubles in N.Ireland and especially those events that impacted the people of Derry and the Bogside whose story the artists felt impelled to tell via the art of mural painting. These huge murals are visited by many thousands of people each year.

The artists began painting their mural for Maribor today 19th April. It will be unveiled by the Dalai Lama on 17th May.

For further information please contact the Art of Reconciliation website. Or visit their own website at www.bogsideartists.com.

Amid National Racial Tension Writing Duo Produces Edgy Sketch Comedy Series

Actor/producer Sean Hampton (CSI, 90210) has teamed up with producer Matt Getic to launch a new sketch comedy series entitled The S&M Experience. “The series fills a gap in the comedy world,” Getic said in a statement. “We’re not chained to conventional characters and a formulaic structure with this show.”

The series has not officially launched but the duo has already raised eyebrows due to the off-color and racial material in some of their skits. Hampton (who is African American) and Getic (who is Caucasian) both feel such criticism is misguided. Commenting on the issue Getic says, “Our creative process doesn’t come from a place of hate, so taking offense to our comedy is ridiculous. The evening news has one hundred percent more racially motivated material than our skits.” Hampton backs his co-creator on this subject and challenges their detractors. “There are a lot of people looking to capitalize off of others work. I think there are more false claims of offense than genuine outrage.”

Aside from these issues preliminary critic response has been glowing. The series will launch on April 26th and the creators have decided to keep their distribution model to new media outlets only. When asked about the decision Hampton said, “We decided to keep our material new media because that will ensure it stays ours. Running it through the political correctness filter will take away from everything we’re trying to accomplish.”

New Review Site WasThatGood.com Delivers Independent Theatre Opinion

WasThatGood.com, a new site dedicated to bringing informed and independent theatre review and opinion to stage fans, has been launched in the UK.

The site has been introduced to address a demand for genuine, unbiased theatre reviews which are different from the now-standard sites which are full of intrusive advertising. WasThatGood.com will offer true, honest reviews of shows like Chicago and Billy Elliot from people who have actually been to see them and who are not promoting anything.

WasThatGood.com has been built by Robert Stuart, a big fan of theatre and shows, who was tired of trawling through websites which consisted of nothing but advertisements. The new site will offer impartial opinion, show times and the chance to buy London theatre tickets too.

Robert Stuart says, “There was clearly a gap in the market for a genuine, honest theatre review website – hence why I decided to introduce WasThatGood.com. There are far too many websites around which are advertising based and which actively promote shows – I wanted to have a place where all fans of theatre can share genuine reviews.”

In recent times the economic crisis has resulted in lots of people choosing not to go to see shows any longer for fear of wasting their money. WasThatGood.com intends to address this by giving people unbiased, genuine reviews via which they can make informed choices about which shows to go and see.

In addition to its review services WasThatGood.com will also host show time and date information and will let people search for the highest-rated shows by peer review. Users will also be able to buy tickets for shows all over the country through the site.

About WasThatGood.com

WasThatGood.com was born in an attempt to give the public a say in the world of theatre by offering an independent forum for them to share their opinions. The intent is to promote open discussion regarding the theatre, which could very well lead to improvement as theatres will have to face reality and will no longer be subject to only a handful of critics who have a channel to the public.

Bikini-USA confirms that Bobby Petrino’s Latest Text Message Partner, Alison Melder, is not Ms. Bikini-USA 2008

Bobby Petrino has been linked to a second young lady for a text messaging-affair. Information on Alison Melder’s modeling site claims for her to have won the title of Ms. Bikini-USA 2008. Bikini-USA would like to clear up this statement as it is not correct and respond to Claims of Involvement with Alison Melder.

When a scandalous news story breaks so many parties are involved and therefore, become breaking news headlines for many different reasons. Recently, Bobby Petrino has been linked with a motorcycle crash and having an affair with a 26 year old assistant who was with him on the day of the motorcycle accident. Petrino and this assistant shared supposedly thousands of text messages during their affair. Now, the latest hot topic with the former Arkansas Razorback’s Head Coach Petrino is that he was also involved with a 26-year old woman, Alison Melder, during this same time period, and they also shared over 200 racy text messages during a two month period. Ms. Alison Melder may or may not have been involved with Mr. Bobby Petrino, I have no way of confirming their exchange of over 200+ text messages, nor is it any of my personal business just how many mistresses the now Former Arkansas Football Head Coach had in his life.

With the breaking story of Alison Melder and Bobby Petrino’s alleged affair, so many have wondered who is Alison Melder and what exactly is her involvement with former Arkansas Razorback’s Football Coach Bobby Petrino? Also, surfacing in news headlines, USA Todayand Lost Lettermen, are claims made by Ms. Melder that she was the Miss Bikini-USA 2008 Bikini Model competition winner. Ms. Melder, on her modeling site, claims that she won the competition and title as Ms. Bikini-USA 08.

It is true that there is an organization called Bikini-USA with a website full of pages of gorgeous bikini models. Bikini-USA does hold various model competitions throughout the year and proudly hosts its annual competition in a unique, exotic location with various top photographers to shoot and help determine the Ms. Bikini-USA for that year. I will say this, Ms. Alison Melder, although extremely attractive, is one bikini model, I will personally never work with. She has on her personal profile as of today on (www.talentfinder.tv/alison) under Awards / Credits: listing herself as Miss Bikini-USA 08 and for that reason alone, I would never work with a model like her. I personally know that this is not true, as I have been actively involved with Bikini-USA. What I can confirm is that Bikini Model Ms. Alison Melder was in no way the winner of the Miss Bikini-USA 2008 bikini model competition. This distinct title was awarded to the ever-so-lovely Ms. Gia Allemand. You have to remember this beautiful and ever so graceful lady. She was one of Jake Pavelka’s favorites on the ABC Show “The Bachelor – On the Wings of Love” season. I had the distinct privilege of doing a phone interview with Ms. Gia Allemand and I have to say that she is just as lovely in her demeanor on a phone interview as she is on TV.  I could only hope to work with such a lovely bikini model down the road. I also had the privilege of putting together her photos and cover story for Bikini-USA (http://www.bikini-usa.com/Gia-Allemand-Model-2008.asp) while she was on “The Bachelor”.

I also asked the Owner’s of Bikini-USA, Jay and Terri Dingle, if they have ever had any knowledge of Alison Melder in any shape form or fashion. I’ve known both Jay and Terri for years, and they both told me that they just can’t ever remember this one particular model.  We are talking about two people who make it their business to personally get to know each and every bikini model who participates in any of their bikini model competitions. Bikini USA owners have been unable to identify Ms. Melder’s involvement with their organization and have been unable to contact Ms. Melder to verify her claims.

The owners of Bikini USA are perplexed by their recent influx of media contacts for interview requests and additional information regarding Alison Melder, the” self-proclaimed winner” of Miss Bikini USA 2008.

“While it is possible Ms. Melder may have won a local photo submission contest, we have no record of her winning or entering an official Bikini USA contest. We do however consider all winners of any contest with which we are associated, part of the Bikini USA family and wish Alison the best in her current and future endeavors” stated Terri Dingle, part owner of the Bikini USA franchise.

Further, no Bikini-USA Staff photographer has any knowledge of Ms. Melder, and every Miss Bikini-USA Competition has a minimum of three Bikini-USA Staff Photographers on hand to work with, photograph and provide advice to all bikini models in their competitions.  You see, not only do I participate in the web site portion of Bikini-USA, but I have also had the privilege to do model photography with them and proud to say that I have more than a few shots on record with them!

The owners of Bikini USA have also made attempts to contact Ms. Melder regarding her involvement with their organization and have been unsuccessful to date. The Bikini USA organization manages thousands of aspiring models and promotes them at events and various sponsored contests.

So I am confused and a tad dismayed that any reputable news agency is reporting that Ms. Alison Melder was the Former Miss Bikini-USA 2008 winner when all they had to do to fact check this was to either hit the Bikini-USA site ; email Jay and Terri Dingle; or that matter, give them a call.

Even furthermore, I can’t confirm or deny that Ms. Alison Melder’s claim to be Miss Motorcycle Mania 2008 is true or false. I can tell you this, after ten minutes of using a little known search engine called Google; I couldn’t locate one official Motorcycle Mania website. I did however find a number of different websites that have added city names to that verbiage but not one for the supposed Miss Motorcycle Mania claim for 2008. My Dad always told me that where there’s smoke there’s fire. It would appear to me that knowing for a fact that Miss Alison Melder’s claim to be Miss Bikini-USA 2008 as false; then I would say it’s probably safe to presume that her claim for her other Awards is the same.

As for her text messages to a married man who was riding around on a motorcycle with a young lady that wasn’t his wife, hey who am I to judge? As for USA Today and other news agencies that have the audacity to call themselves journalists, how about you guys spend at least the same 15 minutes I spent looking online to do at the very least a little fact checking first?  I’m not even a seasoned reporter and even I know that much!

Quotes and Information about Cultural Exchange and the CD, Like A Bridge:

Since its inception in 2007, Hadar’s global jazz band TWIST has developed a reputation for twisting the style of international standards, performing original numbers and presenting songs in different languages. The upcoming recording will feature songs in English, French, Italian, Spanish, Japanese and Malagasy, the language of Madagascar.

“This is the most ambitious project I’ve ever attempted,” says Hadar, “and I feel like an acrobat without a net. I’m just so grateful to have such an amazing team of artists to collaborate with to bring the vision to reality. I have been incubating this project for a year during which I have been influenced by cultural exchange experiences as well as by loss and by my view of the world. I see our planet as if from a spaceship: without borders. We are all One. If each human truly had equal rights to adequate food, shelter, healthcare, safety, liberty and self-expression, I believe there would be no need for war. The Bridge is our metaphor for the connections we can make to each other to foster world unity and harmony. Each song represents a part of that Bridge, either because of its language or because of its theme.”

Co-producer and composer Candace Forest says, “The Bridges Project is the perfect vehicle for Lua’s talents, not only as a singer but also as a cultural diplomat. Her flair for languages combined with her passion for her music always creates deeply satisfying excitement for both her audiences and fellow musicians. I’m thrilled that one of my compositions, Come Back To California, written for our friend from Lille, France, bassist Albin Suffys, received its USA debut at Yoshi’s and will appear on the DVD.”

The title Like A Bridge was inspired by French artist and writer Séverine Suffys, also of Lille, France, after the Suffys family hosted Forest and Hadar for a 2010 cultural exchange concert and master class. She wrote: A la rencontre des musiciens français qui inventent les rythmes et les mélodies des golden gates. Des ponts à danser sur toutes les musiques du monde. (To the meeting with French musicians who invent rhythms and melodies of golden gates. Bridges on which to dance to all the music of the world.)

During that collaboration in Lille, Hadar worked with members of Albin Suffys’ Musiconoclast’ Orchestra as well as the Agora Jazz Trio. Drummer Tohery Ravaloson later suggested a song from his native country, Madagascar. Raha Mbola Misy is performed on the new recording, featuring reed player Larry De La Cruz on flute, complementing Hadar’s Malagasy language vocal.

Another notable French connection came from Hadar’s June 2011 meeting with French pop star Maxime Le Forestier, on the 40th Anniversary of his song about a Blue House in San Francisco’s Castro district. The French language San Francisco appears on both the CD and DVD, and will be heard live in New York. Hadar was also drawn to another of Maxime Le Forestier’s compositions, Né Quelque Part (Born Somewhere), a world beat song about immigration rights featuring a Zulu language chorus. TWIST’s video performance of this song will feature not only global percussionist Ian Dogole, but also South African singer Gideon Bendile and members of his Kalahari Experience Zulu choir.

Educational collaborations with Japan have introduced Lua to koto player Fumiko Ozawa, who this past year made her koto orchestra debut at San Francisco’s Herbst Theater. She guests with TWIST on their interpretation of the Japanese 1963 pop classic Ue o muite aruko, honoring the dignity of the Japanese to “walk with their heads up’” after the devastating earthquake and tsunami of March 2011.

Guest cellist Emil Miland made his Carnegie Hall debut in 2010 with Frederica von Stade in her farewell recital. In the same week he made his jazz debut with TWIST at New York’s Cornelia Street Café, and has contributed to Like A Bridge on the mystical Tom Jobim song, Imagina. A champion of new works for cello, he has given premieres of music written specifically for him by such composers as Ernst Bacon, David Carlson, Andrew Imbrie, Lou Harrison, Jake Heggie and Dwight Okamura. As a member of the San Francisco Opera Orchestra since 1988, he has collaborated with many singers in recital including Zheng Cao, Joyce di Donato, Susan Graham, Marilyn Horne, Lorraine Hunt-Lieberson, and Frederica von Stade.

Brazilian drummer Celso Alberti says, ” It was an awesome experience recording with Lua along with all the great musicians that where part of this project. From start to finish the energy was highly positive and it was translated in the beautiful music that we made together. The crew capturing the audio and the video was one of the best I ever worked with.”

The development of these far-reaching arrangements could not occur without the artistic contribution of TWIST’s Music Director, Dr. Jason Martineau. Martineau says, “The song list for Like A Bridge honors the differences among us, celebrating their beauty, while seeing that we are, underneath, the same.“

Bios of the Core Band members on the CD:

1970s Las Vegas Chronicled in Graphic New Memoir

Local Author Marlayna Glynn Brown grew up in the 1970s Las Vegas mafia casino era. Her first memoir, Overlay, reveals an intriguing narrative of a strong child protagonist born into an ongoing cycle of alcoholism and abandonment amidst fallen adults. Marlayna describes a childhood that enabled her to develop a powerful sense of self-preservation as the people entrusted with her care abdicated their responsibilities. Her story reveals the personalities of the bizarre cast of characters that populated her life as she moved from home to home, parent to parent, family to family and ultimately to homelessness at the age of fourteen. Overlay will appeal to fans of the movie Casino and readers who prefer a strong journalistic storytelling style that does not delve into pity.

“Overlay isn’t just about me and my story,” Marlayna explains. “It provides an opportunity for the reader to examine their choices, decisions and actions and consider how they affect others. We often underestimate our power to transform those around us – at times irrevocably.”

Marlayna’s story is relevant and inspirational for anyone with a family member struggling with alcoholism or addiction. Parents and children will easily relate to Marlayna’s haunting and riveting tales of trying to make childhood sense of adult nonsensical behavior. Her powerful story will captivate readers and remain in their consciousness long after the last page of her story has been turned.

“I’ve been humbled and surprised by the outpouring of emotion from the readers. As a child I felt quite alone in dealing with the dysfunctional insanity in my family. I’ve learned as an adult that I was not as unique or alone as I’d previously believed,” Marlayna states.
