Comedy As A Catalyst For Science Education

The Emmy Award Winning Team at Page Turner Adventures is moving full STEAM ahead with a three-part project (videos, live shows, and web portal) that uses comedy to get kids excited about Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math.

Founded by Riley Roam and Kenny Mikey, Page Turner Adventures has always used the double whammy of comedy and story to educate and entertain. Their videos, live touring shows, and workshops have been inspiring kids across the country for over a decade. Now they’re turning their attention to STEAM with a Transmedia Storytelling project called THE STEAM TRUNK CIRCUS. It’s the story of a mysterious circus performer who incorporates the work of Edison, Einstein, Curie, and Picasso, into his act.

A project that combines juggling, unicycling, and comedy with science is sure to be fun. But to ensure that the program is also effective, the team enlisted the help of Georgette Yakman, founding researcher for STEAM and 2009 NCTC STEM Educator of the Year.

The STEAM Trunk Circus will be told through short videos that schools can also air on their morning announcements, a live multi-media touring show, and an interactive web portal with games, experiments, crafts, and activities. Each piece of the puzzle unlocks a different element of the story world. “Comedy and transmedia storytelling are great ways to interest kids in STEAM,” says Mikey. “This project is also about encouraging creativity, thinking,” agrees Roam, “using humor plus transmedia seemed like the perfect fit.”

“We also knew we had to figure out a creative way to fund it,” adds Mikey. “We’re doing an Indiegogo campaign, so people can help us develop the project as we go. In exchange, they can get all different kinds of perks including videos, tickets, shows for their school, even a starring role in the video series!”

‘Undroppable’ Announces High School Election Tour The ‘Undroppable’ producing team of Scooter Braun, Adam McKay, Jason Pollock, and Sharon Chang today announced their upcoming Undroppable Election Tour, beginning in Los Angeles on October 24 and going through Election Day.

Filmmaker Jason Pollock, the creator of ‘Undroppable,’ will be touring 14 high schools in 10 states for the final two weeks leading up to Election Day. His hour- long presentation to students in auditoriums and gymnasiums across the country is comprised of a speech, ‘Undroppable’ videos clips, as well as a panel discussion with local and state leaders.

“The main message of this tour is that education is important,” said Pollock. “Most high school students can’t vote this year, but they need to know what’s going on just as much as everyone else.”

The ‘Undroppable’ team will continue their social media campaign on Youtube, Twitter, Tumblr, and Facebook throughout the upcoming tour. The campaign has already been featured in Time Magazine and USA Today. ‘Undroppable’ has also received tweets from pop star Justin Bieber, as well as U.S. Secretary of Education, Arne Duncan.

Their films have already been met with the royal seal of approval from Camilla declaring that Wallace and Gromit are Prince Charles’ “favourite people in the world”.

The one-minute animation begins in the familiar setting of 62 West Wallaby Street with the ever faithful and long suffering Gromit sitting at his sewing machine making miles of bunting to adorn National Trust places across the country.

Amid National Racial Tension Writing Duo Produces Edgy Sketch Comedy Series

Actor/producer Sean Hampton (CSI, 90210) has teamed up with producer Matt Getic to launch a new sketch comedy series entitled The S&M Experience. “The series fills a gap in the comedy world,” Getic said in a statement. “We’re not chained to conventional characters and a formulaic structure with this show.”

The series has not officially launched but the duo has already raised eyebrows due to the off-color and racial material in some of their skits. Hampton (who is African American) and Getic (who is Caucasian) both feel such criticism is misguided. Commenting on the issue Getic says, “Our creative process doesn’t come from a place of hate, so taking offense to our comedy is ridiculous. The evening news has one hundred percent more racially motivated material than our skits.” Hampton backs his co-creator on this subject and challenges their detractors. “There are a lot of people looking to capitalize off of others work. I think there are more false claims of offense than genuine outrage.”

Aside from these issues preliminary critic response has been glowing. The series will launch on April 26th and the creators have decided to keep their distribution model to new media outlets only. When asked about the decision Hampton said, “We decided to keep our material new media because that will ensure it stays ours. Running it through the political correctness filter will take away from everything we’re trying to accomplish.”

First Images Of WWII German Submarine Sunk 68 Years Ago In Brazil

The U-Boat was located by the Schurmann Family in July 2011. Almost one year after locating the submarine, the Schurmanns joined efforts with deep sea diving experts to collect images of the U-513. With specialized technology, using a remotely operated underwater vehicle (ROV) the expedition made a 135 meters dive to film and take pictures of the wreck, for the first time in history.

“After years of research, finally we watched this historical moment. We first saw a shadow then gradually the images became very clear, the submarine is almost intact and whole as if she was placed there to sleep” said Vilfredo Schurmann leader of the expedition.

“The ROV (Remotely operated underwater vehicle) did several dives and with every new image we celebrated this great feat” says David Schurmann, the film director.

It all began in 2001 aboard their sailing yacht “Aysso”, when the Schurmanns a well-known sailing and expedition family in Brazil, was told of the story of a German submarine, sunk in 1943 during WWII in the waters of Southern Brazil.

Vilfredo and Heloisa Schurmann where hooked on the mysterious story and started researching the facts in the National Archives in Washington – USA, Berlin – Germany and in Rio de Janeiro – Brazil.

They were granted a license from the Brazilian Navy, and obtained the support of the Santa Catarina Government and UNIVALI University and were sponsored by TOTVS, CPE (Coastal Planning & Engineering) and FUGRO BRAZIL to further the search.

A team of 35 professionals (all volunteers) which included divers, oceanographers, retired officers from the Brazilian and USA Navy & Air Force, archaeologists, historians, filmmakers and the last surviving member of the USA airplane responsible for the U-boat sinking aided on the search.

After 2 years and 18 expeditions at sea, operating Side Scanning Sonars and Magnetometer, on July 17th 2011 on board their adapted sailing yacht “Aysso”, the Schurmanns located the exact position of the sunken submarine.

On March 8, 2012, aboard two ships, the expedition led by Vilfredo Schurmann and a crew of 20, filmed for the first time in history since her sinking 68 years ago, images of U-513. The U-boat is considered one of the WWII submarines sunk furthers away from Germany during battle.

THE UNDERWATER FILMING
The underwater footage of the U-513 was made with a ROV model Sea Eye Falcon Marine, capable of operating up to 300 meters deep, assigned and operated by FUGRO BRAZIL.

S/V “Aysso” and M/V “Thunder” anchored at the location, launched the ROV (Remotely operated underwater vehicle) and with sonar-aided navigation (similar to a ship’s radar – working under water) located the submarine.

The recordings were performed with the ROV camera itself. For best results, HD 3D cameras were also mounted in housings to captured images of the submarine.

HISTORY
The U-513, under the command of the German captain Karl Friedrich Guggenberger, had the mission to sink any enemy vessel on the route between Buenos Aires and Rio de Janeiro. She had already torpedoed three ships, including two Americans and a Brazilian.

The U-Boat-513 sank on July 19th, 1943. Lieutenant Roy S. Whitcomb was on a PBM-VP-74 flying-boat bomber on an antisubmarine sweep and spotted the surfaced U-boat. He ordered the attack. Captain Guggenberger on the deck of the submarine saw the approaching plane, he knew there was no time to submerge and began a counterattack. Whitcomb’s dropped six 225-pound bombs depth charges and the U-boat absorbed the full impact on her hull.

The U-513, 76 meters in length sunk immediately with its 46 crew. 7 men who were on deck where the only survivors, among them the captain Guggenberger.

THE SCHURMANN FAMILY
The Schurmann Family is the first Brazilian family to circumnavigate the world on a sailboat and the only Brazilian family to have done it twice. A household name in Brazil, the Schurmann Family has been active around the world through their online school program, as well as their films and TV programs.

In 1984 Vilfredo, Heloisa and their children left their home, their work and school and set off from Florianópolis, the capital city of the State of Santa Catarina, in southern Brazil, to pursue their dream: circumnavigate the world on a sailing yacht.

Their children, Pierre, David and Wilhelm, were 15, 10 and 7 years old. On this first adventure, the Schurmann Family spent 10 years at sea.

In 1997 the Schurmann Family began their second great adventure Magellan Global Adventure. The goal was to retrace the route sailed by Ferdinand Magellan’s fleet, the first complete circumnavigation of the planet. For this adventure, apart from the parents only their son David Schurmann and Kat, their 5-year-old daughter went along. Magellan Global Adventure was followed by more than 1,5 million people, from 44 countries. Every month the adventure’s filmed reports, broadcast internationally, had an average of 40 million television viewers in Brazil and many more around the world. After 30 months, the Schurmann’s yacht returned to Brazil.

A Detour to Mexico: From Mystery to Movie

RisingStar31Productions announces a new ‘star search’ for talented actors and musicians. The company launched two online contests to begin auditions for the film, A Detour to Mexico. It’s a musical which was co-authored with the late Mrs. Sammy Davis, Jr.

Offering a new twist in ‘audience participation,’ the public will be invited to help judge the contestants, who’ll win cash prizes as well as the opportunity to perform in the film.

Pamela Sherrod, the co-writer of the screenplay, says, “There’s so much talent out there, artists who’re just waiting to be discovered. And there are unforgettable characters in the story . . . just waiting to come to life.”

A Detour to Mexico is a musical adventure that follows the escapades of a family of performers who encounter unexpected challenges while traveling to a talent competition. The story’s characters, however, weren’t the only ones who’d experience unexpected trials during their journey. After completing the first draft, the writers actually stumbled down their own difficult road.

A mystery still surrounds the striking similarities between part of the plot and the film, The Cheetah Girls 2: When in Spain, which was produced by Whitney Houston and featured the star, Raven-Symone. Sherrod, who’d given the story to an old friend (and mentor) who was a writer/producer for the show, That’s So Raven, inquired about the similarities, but her calls were never returned.

Three years later, Altovise Davis died shortly after they formed a company to produce the film. When Sherrod’s fiancé died thirty-five days, she was devastated. She dropped the project to begin ministry work, seeking to offer hope and encouragement to people struggling with addiction. Eventually, however, it led her back to producing inspirational books and videos. She chronicled the stormy events surrounding her partner’s last years in The Last Chapter in the Life of Mrs. Sammy Davis, Jr., and published their screenplay in the book, A Detour to Mexico.

Sherrod officially opened the contests last week, and is excited about producing the film.

“It offers a powerful message about the miracle of love. . .” she says, “and I believe it’s time to share it.”

There’s also another message, and it was the primary reason why the women initially joined forces. Altovise was married for twenty years to the famous Rat Pack star, Sammy Davis, Jr. He’d started performing when he was only four, and had never attended school. Sammy couldn’t read or write until he was an adult, and always regretted it. He urged his wife to reach out to kids and emphasize the importance of getting an education. Together, the women set out to accomplish this through their stories and future films. A Detour to Mexico was their first project.

The film’s progress is significant for another reason. Altovise endured a long battle with alcoholism, and struggled to overcome the stigma associated with addiction. “In fact . . .” says Sherrod, “she was told she’d never be anything but a famous man’s wife, or rise above her battle with alcohol to accomplish anything.”

“I beg to differ with that,” Sherrod continues. “Altovise helped create a magnificent story, and I wish that she was here to finally see it produced.”

Sherrod looks forward to discovering and showcasing the talent of emerging new artists, and hopes that the contests, as well as the film, will be the beginning of exciting new careers for the contest winners.

‘A Detour to Mexico’ Video Contest showcases the acting and production skills used to produce a three-minute scene from the story. One prize of $500 is awarded to the winner (s) of this competition, as well as the opportunity to star in the film.

‘A Detour to Mexico’ Musicians’ Contest is based on a music-related scene from the screenplay and showcases the vocalist, band and/or singing/dancing group that wins the best videotaped performance of an original arrangement. One prize of $500 is awarded to the winner (s) and the opportunity to perform in the film.
