The London On Film season will include events such as a Soho Weekender (24-26 July) to celebrate the unique culture of Soho captured in films from 1896 – 1985 such as West End Jungle (1961), The Small World of Sammy Lee(1963) and Sunshine in Soho (1956). There will also be a discussion event Vanishing Soho on the state of Soho today in the light of current major changes for those who live and play there. Sapphire (Basil Dearden, 1959) is a film-maker’s response to the Notting Hill race riots wrapped up in a murder mystery while Babylon (Franco Rosso, 1981) shows the demoralisation of black youth, and offers an eerily prescient portrait of the situation in Deptford which would give rise to the Brixton Riots of the same year. Over the weekend from 19-21 June, Parviz Kimiavi will feature. Spanning four screenings over three days, this will be the UK’s first major survey of maverick filmmaker Parviz Kimiavi, a pioneer of alternative cinema in 1970’s Iran. Aussie Mobster, Aurea Morrisey, Holds Hollywood Hostage

Australian born actress, Aurea Morrisey, has just finished shooting indie feature film “So You Want To Be A Gangster?” in Los Angeles. The film by Mexican born Director, Alex Kahuam, has high hopes after his short film version was accepted into Cannes Film Festival this year.

Aurea plays volatile Christina, riding her sexuality to pursue a capricious agenda involving a deadly cocktail of guns, drugs, and ambition. When asked of her experience playing Christina, Aurea laughed, “Within the first 10 minutes of arriving on set, I had to pash the lead red-headed Mexican character, pull a gun on someone, and then got shot a gruesome death’.

With more than 15 years in the industry, Aurea’s acting skills were polished at the New York Film Academy in 2013. This lead to television roles in MSNBC’s “Heist”, VH1’s “Candidly Nicole”, and several feature films including Turkish film “Yarmani” with Paris Hilton and “Second Coming of Christ” with Tom Sizemore and Sally Kirkland.

Ms. Morrisey has also commenced work playing a talent agent on a comedic television pilot and web-series, by Steven A. Davis, titled “Two19 Game Night” which follows the lives of Five creative (and some not-so-creative) friends as they come together to relive their bizarre and often horrific dates that have occurred during the week.

Aurea plans a short break between Hollywood hold up’s when she plans to return to Australia to spend time surfing with the dolphins. She’s looking forward to becoming a Godmother to her best friend’s first born child and some springtime fun with family and friends in September.

Michigan-Based Indie Film Tops $10,000 Kickstarter Goal in Under Two Days

Star Trek – Horizon, a feature-length independent film currently in production in southeast Michigan, launched their immensely successful Kickstarter campaign over Easter weekend, in an effort to raise funds necessary for completion of their film. In just 32 hours, the campaign earned an impressive $10,000 toward making the ambitious project a reality. The Kickstarter campaign runs through May 19, while the completed film is expected to premiere by the end of 2014.

Starring Paul Lang (Captain Harrison Hawke), Marc Bowers (Commander Jackson Gates),Ryan Webber (Commander Francis Brookes), and Callie Bussell (Lieutenant T’mar), Horizonfollows Captain Harrison Hawke and the crew of the Earth vessel NX-04 Discovery. In 2160, the Coalition of Planets, a young alliance of worlds led by Earth, is at war with the Romulan Empire. Desperate for a chance to gain the upper hand in the war, the Coalition forms an alliance with T’mar, a Romulan defector, in the hope that she can provide valuable intelligence on her former masters.

From the film’s Kickstarter page: “It is our goal to create a film that is worthy of the franchise and can close out the story threads left hanging after the untimely cancellation of Enterprise (the final Trek TV series) in 2005. However, if you have not seen any of the previous franchise films or TV series, this close tie to Enterprise is not cause to worry. While this film will close out story threads that began in that series, it will also certainly tell an original story and be able to stand alone as a science fiction feature film.”

Filmmaker Tommy Kraft, the prodigious 22-year-old Albion College graduate behind Horizon, hails from Spring Arbor, a small town just southwest of Jackson, Michigan. He founded Project [N] ReSource, a production company behind numerous short films, in 2005. Kraft cut his filmmaking teeth on those short films, he says, and they prepared him for the challenges of making his first independent feature. With Horizon, he has taken on a subject grand in its scope and execution, yet extremely close to his heart. Of the project, Kraft says he intends “only to use my skills to show my love for a franchise that has been an endless source of inspiration for me, not only professionally but personally as well.”

About Project [N] ReSource:
Project [N] ReSource was co-founded in late December of 2005 by Tommy Kraft. Currently based in Jackson, Michigan, the company focuses on the production of live action films and some machinima.

London Premier Hotels: London welcomes movie lovers at screening of Oscar nominees

Exploring the prime tourist spots and experiencing festivals and carnivals are very common approaches towards enjoying a London trip. The tourist spots will stand at their positions for ever and the festivals would happen every year according to the calendar. But to make their London trip memorable, visitors must try to be a part of something, which is unusual. The New Year is still very young and the festive mood is quite steady in London. People are enjoying their time by indulging in diverse activities and giving priority to entertainment.

For people who love to add the essence of entertainment in their holiday trips, this is a great time to be at London. It’s the time to experience the cinema craze in London. Oscar nominations for this year have just been announced and theaters across London now extend towards movie buffs wonderful opportunity to watch the movies that are likely to bag the iconic Golden trophy at the Awards Ceremony. Cinema lovers should not the miss the opportunity of watching and judging the nominated movies before their fate get decided at Los Angeles a few days later.

Right now some of the top cinema houses in London city are screening movies like Wolf of Wall Street, American Hustle and 12 Years A Slave. Queues are getting longer and one should rush to ensure a good seat inside the hall. To make the experience of watching a movie very special, visitors may also opt for Immersive Cinema, a new concept that has turned into a trend in the last few years. A specialty of the Future Cinema and Secret Cinema, the Immersive Cinema gives audiences a scope to take part in the movie they are watching.

Screening of such movies is done at selected locations with mirroring the scenery in the movie. Very recently, screening of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest was held at a hospital and to bring the effect of the venue on the movie, the organizers converted the venue into a mental institution and actors were seen portraying roles of patients and doctors. Many organizers even allow audiences to take part in various activities before the start of the movie and are also provided with dresses that characters of the movie are seen wearing. Same style was followed during the screening of Casablanca at the Roxy in Shadwell. To bring the movie effect, the venue was given the look of a Moroccan hang-out of 1940s and people were seen roaming here and there dressed up like American GIs and Nazi officers.

To be a part of this very special kind of screening, interested people need to sign up to the mailing list of the organizers. Audiences need to make sure that details of the movie shown to them are kept secret until they arrive at the venue. As the procedure goes, audiences are given instructions about time and place to turn up and they are also told what to wear and bring.

Since Central London and its prestigious West End are ornamented with lots of cinema halls, getting a scope of enjoying Immersive Cinema should not be difficult. Yet staying at the Shaftesbury Premier London Paddington would be a smart decision since the hotel is very close to the Paddington Underground Railway Terminus from where trains to all major cinema venues in London are frequently available.

Shaftesbury Premier London Paddington, a London Premier Hotel is located at 27 Devonshire Terrace, Paddington and to book a room there one can either call at +44 (0) 20 7745 1212 or log on to http://www.londonpremierhotels.com, the official website of the London Premier Hotels.

About the motion picture
Peter G Kuys, Chairman of Kuys Entertainment adds: “When earlier this year we became involved in representing John and his “God’s Lions” series, I had become spellbound by his storytelling and decided that this was serious motion picture material. Reaching out to my friend (current editor on The Mentalist) Christopher Cibelli drew a similar passionate response and we set out to get a screenplay written and find other warriors for this project with great results.”

“This is a story that needs to be told on the screen” says Kuys. kuysleis.com/credits

The capital catches fire with Hunger Party Games

As London prepares to host the world premiere of the Hunger Games: Catching Fire, eager fans can get in on the action with The Robin Collective’s brilliantly bonkers Hunger Party Games. LondonTown.com talks exclusively to the events and experimental food company’s founder Robin Fegan to find out what the nefarious Game Makers have in store.

Please can you tell us a bit more about the Hunger Party Games.

Robin Fegan: In celebration of the release of the second Hunger Games film, The Robin Collective and Indeedy Incorporated are holding a unique party at the Bethnal Green Working Men’s Club on 15 November. [The singer, presenter, DJ and] our own queen of the Capitol Jess Indeedy will reap contestants to fight in this year’s Hunger Party Games.

Will the contestants be shot at with arrows and forced to forage for their own food?

RF: Not exactly. Every ticket holder’s name will be put into the reaping. Throughout the night, people will be selected to compete in murderous parlour games, and cannon blasts will salute the fallen.

In between games, the victors will be celebrated and there will be dancing. Because this is a Quarter Quell, the last game of the night will see all the victors compete one last time.

Yikes, can you give us a hint as to what the murderous party games might involve?

The Game Makers are currently busy coming up with the most devious and evil games imaginable like Musical Killing Chairs and Pass the Parcel… of death!

How should contestants dress?

They are encouraged to wear outfits representative of their district. For example, glasses without lenses for the Shoreditch district, or obnoxious red trousers for the Chelsea districts. The reaping will be random so we won’t favour any districts.

What made you decide to hold a Hunger Games-themed event?

We’re big fans of the books and Katniss’ struggle against the Capitol is very much a metaphor for our struggle against non-Hunger Games-themed events.

How would you sum up the event in 10 words?

RF: ‘May the odds be ever in your favour,’ Caesar Flickerman.

The Hunger Party Games will be held at the Bethnal Green Working Men’s Club on 15 November from 9pm to 2am. Tickets are available from www.therobincollective.co.uk.
Competition: Win a set of tickets and the complete book trilogy

We are giving away two sets of tickets to the Hunger Party Games along with copies of the complete book trilogy. To enter, visit www.therobincollective.co.uk and then email us to let us know how many partying tracker jackers there are on the website.

The competition runs from 22nd October to 5th November 2013. Email your answer to competitions@londontown.com, along with your name and contact details. To be eligible to enter, you must be aged 18 years or over. Winners will be selected at random.

Ghostkeeper 2 – The Ghost That Came Back

The last thing that writer/director Jim Makichuk ever imagined was the return of GHOSTKEEPER; his first feature film made in 1980.The supernatural thriller came and went in the early 1980s. But around 2005 Jim learned that some German horror fans found VHS copies of the movie and thus began a cult following. Soon British horror writers asked for interviews and in 2011 distributor Code Red discovered two 35mm prints in a New York storage unit.

This eventually led to a 30th Anniversary DVD in 2012. Jim rounded up actors Murray Ord and Riva Spier and 86-year old GEORGIE COLLINS, a legendary theater actor from Alberta, Canada. A commentary track was included along with an interview with Georgie Collins and cameraman John Holbrook. But it didn’t end there.

In 2013 GHOSTKEEPER fans and friends encouraged Jim to write a new screenplay, some suggested a remake and others a new story. Jim came up with a unique story that would use both the original cast from 1980 as well as a new younger cast in GHOSTKEEPER 2 (NEVER GO BACK). The original movie was based on the “Windigo”, a mythical Native Indian creature that haunted wilderness parts of Canada.

The present-day story is simple; the original cast of 1980 will play themselves 33 years later and have come back to the DEER LODGE HOTEL for a reunion. But as the story begins, things begin to happen that reflect the original 1980 story and when two of the original cast disappear it begins to reflect the past as flashbacks fill in the story. To add another element, a Native Indian trapper appears from a raging snowstorm and suggests that the Windigo does exist and that they are all trapped inside with nowhere to run or hide. Thus the new movie becomes both a remake and sequel. Jim, along with producer Joe Thornton will fund the feature on Kickstarter.com.

Yuta Okamura & Tadamori Yagi Interview: Waking Up

Awarding winning short film Waking Up directed by Yuta Okamura is a about a man who works an a crematorium and recognizes one of the bodies as a professor he once knew which opens up a rediscovery of himself. The script was written by Kimberly Hwang and stars Tadamori Yagi

Director Yuta Okamura and Lead Actor Tadamori Yagi talk about their short film WAKING UP,” that will be screening at the Asians On Film Festival February 16, 2013 @ 9:00PM.

Scott: Where is this story come from?

Yuta: First of all, Kimberly wrote the script, and my producer Vanessa and I chose it because we thought it has very strong universal message. Film is about regret of this artist, and I found sympathy with the character. After graduation, I often talked about our friends like “What we do? Are you gonna still do filmmaking?”. Some of my friends went back home. There are unclear fear around us to face to our own life after the graduation. I think everyone passes this kind of time, and even this discussion focuses on graduated student, but it’s very universal because I believe everyone wonder their own future. That’s why I thought it could be an universal film with my personal experiences.

Scott: How did you meet this man (pointing to Tad, the lead actor)?

Yuta: I met him at audition. We called a lot of actors for this role, Jake, and met great actors. But you know, if you meet many actors, you start to feel everyone is same. I found most actors have great skill and talent, but couldn’t find unique speciality from them. But when Tad enters the room, he has something different- something unique. He can bring his personality into the character and make it real. Tad brought us so many things we had not be able to find from the script. That’s what we are finding- someone who can make the character three dimensional. So after the audition, we didn’t discuss anything about this role. We all knew Tad is the best choice.

Scott: What do you think about the ending of the film? What did you try to do with it?

Yuta: As you know, it is very simple story. It’s obvious that you cannot make this story into a feature film, but that’s the greatest thing about making short film. Audience can fill spaces after watching it. In the ending, Jake starts to change his life, but not dramatically. We don’t know what he will do after the moment. You can imagine a lot of different ways. Actually, it much better to blight each of them’s choice. My biggest work of this film was to express this strong feeling of courage and decision. If you could feel its transformation, this film works. Once you get the first step, the rest of steps follow you.

Screenwise Diploma of Screen Acting Graduates To Showcase At Sydney’s Carriageworks

Screenwise Film and Television Acting School is introducing its first Graduate Diploma students to the industry with live, and screen, presentations at Sydney’s historical Carriageworks this October.

Directors include Di Smith (Puberty Blues), Stephen Wallace (Blood Oath) and Aarne Neeme (Home and Away) and rehearsals are in full swing. “This is going to be an exceptional show of talent that will benchmark newcomers into the industry” says Principal Director and CEO Denise Roberts.

The Screenwise 2 Year Full-Time Diploma of Screen Acting is the first of its kind in Australia. The Government accredited course was established in 2011 after Denise Roberts, CEO of Screenwise and renowned Australian actress (Underbelly Razor, Packed To The Rafters, Cliffy, Mrs Biggs, Always Greener, GP) recognised the need for a Screen Acting specific full-time Diploma course.

The Diploma focuses on the particular skills and knowledge required for acting on screen, which includes post-production. It provides acting students with intense training and mentorship from some of Australia’s best actors, directors and casting consultants. All tutors are current industry working professionals.

On Graduation, the Diploma offers the students a major industry showcase comprising of a live stage performance and a screen performance presented to invited industry professionals including Casting Directors, Agents, Producers and Directors who are personally introduced to the graduates afterwards. The Graduates showreel, which is shot on location with a professional director, is presented to Agents and Casting Directors at the showcase.

With the decline of theatre work for actors in Australia and the increase of quality local film and television productions, acting for screen is a vital skill that all actors should develop. The Media Entertainment and Arts Alliance (MEAA) statistics show that 85% of an actor’s career-long income will be derived from television, which is why Screenwise chose to dedicate their services to providing actors with the specialised skills to not only meet the demands of today’s Film and Television industry but also the opportunity to succeed as a reputable actor both nationally and internationally.

Applications for the 2013 intake for the Diploma opened on the 31st of August 2012 and close on November 15th 2012. Call back auditions will take place early December 2012. Late applications will be accepted subject to availability and a $20 administration fee.
